Academics

The CISCE Examination is administered by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (“CISCE”), New Delhi. The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education has been designed as a Course of General Education and all candidates at St. Dominic’s, are required to attempt six subjects and some SUPW (Socially Useful Productive Work).

The examination taken at the tenth level, pre-supposes a school course of ten years duration and therefore the senior teachers of the School in Class X, form the faculty heads that control and arrange the syllabi with the intent to create a core of subjects that not only prepares each child for the certificate at the tenth level but also ensure that each child achieves a minimum standard at each year of completion.

English language is at the core of the CISCE syllabus and every child must pass the English paper along with four other papers at the tenth level in order to obtain an CISCE pass certificate. Each child is required to attempt at least one other paper that is a second language. Candidates of Indian Nationality must offer an Indian Language approved by the Council. At present the school offers Kananda and Hindi as second languages.

History, Civics and Geography forms the third of the compulsory subjects that every child must attempt. At St. Dominic’s every child must also attempt the Mathematics and Science papers. Each of these five papers have a 20% internal assessment component and an 80% External Examination component.

Project work is integral to the subjects taught and the Science Exhibition held in June each year is an opportunity for the children to exhibit their work.

From Class I to Class 8 there are several additional subjects that are included into the curriculum which make the St. Dominic’s educational experience unique and includes computer applications. As set out in the guidelines by the CISCE, the assessment process requires that 10% of each the three term exams, 20% of the mid-term and 50% of the final exam is used for the assessment of a child’s performance over an academic year.

Our Kindergarten programme encourages a love of learning by using a programme designed by subject experts in this age group. We focus a lot of attention and care for this group of children as we understand that what children learn up to the age of seven will affect how they learn and absorb information the rest of their lives. The timetable and events of this group of children have also been slightly altered and shortened to accommodate the needs of this younger group of children.

The sixth paper at St. Dominic’s is Physical Education which has a 50% internal assessment and a 50% external assessment. As our curriculum is formed around a holistic and balanced approach to living we believe that the inclusion of this sixth paper to be an integral part in the lives of our children during school and for their betterment in the future.
